What I’ve Been Up To

I thought I would share a snippet of what I’ve been up to from my instagram, besides spending a lot of time training for my first roller derby bout, dying my hair blonde and moving house yet again, of course!

Holiday Nails

This is probably my favourite nail varnish of 2013, Barry M Countess. My favourite thing about this polish is how it looks with a top coat. I got it for Christmas from my boyfriend, as well as some Barry M limited edition glitter and a nail art pen, neither of which I have tried out yet.

This was an attempt at nail art, but I didn’t like it very much. It’s got a white and blue gradient with a thin layer of Barry M Silver Foil over the top and a snowflake drawn on.

I really like this design, it’s one of the first ones I’ve done with crackle polishes, but I love the blue and silver combination. I wore it to the New Year’s Eve party I went to.

Polishes Used:
1. Barry M Countess / Sally Hansen Insta Dri
2. MUA Bold Blue / MUA All Nude / Barry M Silver Foil / Sally Hansen Insta Dri
3. Barry M Blue Grape / OPI Silver Shatter / Sally Hansen Insta Dri

Nail catch-up: Barry M Crystal Glaze

I was really excited for the Barry M autumn release, but it wasn’t this polish I wanted it was the mattes. I bought the burgundy matte polish but I wasn’t that impressed by it. However, I found some awesome nail art for the Crystal Glaze polish that layered it over black and decided to recreate it. I really liked it, it was one of those nail designs that I couldn’t stop looking at!

I couldn’t resist using the Crystal Glaze top coat again today. The base colour is W7 Brownie which is the perfect autumnal brown, I love how it blends in with Crystal Glaze, although over all I think I like the black best.

Polishes Used
1. W7 Black / Barry M Crystal Glaze / Sally Hansen Insta Dri
2. W7 Brownie / Barry M Crystal Glaze / Sally Hansen Insta Dri

Nail catch-up: Barry M Hi-Shine Gelly Art

I recently bought two new Barry M Gelly polishes, Papaya and Lychee. I figured the coral and neutral colours would be suitable for work, plus I can never turn down a Barry M Gelly polish. This nail art combined both of them, the Lychee managed to work for stamping, it might look a bit light to some, but I like the subtlety of this design. Also if you like the Papaya polish, my friend has done a great review of it here.

This one is the opposite of subtle, I wanted something bright and sparkly on my nails. The glitter coat is BYS All That Glitters, I really like the different sizes and colours of glitter, especially the small red glitter which gives it a really nice depth.

For a long time Plum was my favourite nail polish in my collection, but now I think Papaya might have over taken it. I can’t really beat the Gelly polishes for staying power though, which to me makes them a firm favourite.

Polishes used:
1. Barry M Hi-Shine Gelly Papaya / Barry M Hi-Shine Gelly Lychee / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri
2. Barry M Hi-Shine Plum / BYS All That Glitters / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri

Nail catch-up: Maybelline Chalk Dust, flowers and a textured gradient.

NYC lexington yellow and maybelline chalk dust

I finally go to try out Maybelline’s Chalk Dust! I mentioned it in a ‘what I like this fortnight’ post almost a month ago, but never got to try it because I left it at my parents. I like it as much as I thought I would though, I love how it looks like the black is splattered on, almost like graffiti. I can’t wait to try it over a gradient as well, so both the glitter colours really show up.

This nail art is from a few months ago, but I wanted to share it because it’s quite summery. I haven’t done much nail art by hand, but this was so easy I don’t know why I didn’t try it before. I didn’t have a nail art dotting tool so I just used a hair grip, which worked just as well. I have to recreate this, maybe in different colours, because it’s so fun.

Barry M Ridley Road Gradient Ombre Nails

I love the Barry M textured nails, but I get bored having just one colour on my nail at a time, so I wanted to try a gradient. I like how this turned out, I think the blue and the mint green go well together, it feels very holiday themed.

Polishes used:
1. NYC Lexington Yellow / Maybelline Chalk Dust / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri
2. Barry M Hi-Shine Gelly Plum / MUA All Nude / Collection 2000 Aztec Gold
3. Barry M Textured Ridley Road / MUA Bold Blue

Nail catch-up: gradients and speckled blue.

This post features a lot of MUA’s £1 range, the formula is a bit patchy in places but over all the colours that MUA has put out are ones that really appeal to me. This one is Bold Blue with a coat of W7’s Salt n Pepper and then another of Bold Blue over the top, I really like the black glitter, so I wanted to try out a design that just used the black glitter without the white background. After doing this I did buy Maybelline’s Chalk Dust, but I accidentally left it at my parents, so I haven’t even tried it out yet!

Yellow and green gradient ombre nails

Believe it or not the green in here is MUA’s Pistachio Ice Cream as seen here, I wasn’t sure whether it’d work over the yellow, but it actually has a really cool neon look.

Ombre gradient and stamping nails

I really like the white onwhite stamping look, so I did a gradient using MUA’s Bold Blue. The stamping over the top is Cheeky XL plate C, the stamps on there are so large, which I feel is wasted on my small nails.

Polishes Used:
1. MUA Bold Blue / W7 Salt n Pepper / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri
2. NYC Lexington Yellow / MUA Pistachio Ice Cream / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri
3. MUA All Nude / MUA Bold Blue / Cheeky XL C / Konad Stamping Polish White / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri

Nail catch-up: studs, yellow and yes, mint green!

I got some Model’s Own nail beads for my birthday from one of my friends and I couldn’t wait to recreate the Nailasaurus’ studded look. Next on my list is actual caviar nails, but I feel like I want something special to wear them to.

I was just going to buy some mint nail varnish when this colour, NYC Lexington Yellow, caught my eye and I couldn’t resit buying it. I love the stamping over the top, geometric is in at the moment, it looks a bit bumble bee-esque but I quite like that about it, it’s very summery.

This was the mint polish I had meant to buy, it’s MUA’s Pistachio Ice Cream. I love the new Essie knock-off style bottles, as the old MUA style lid was really hard to hold. The formula of this was pretty good, I’m wearing three coats (plus one of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri) because it was a little streaky, but for £1 a bottle it’s everything I could want. I was going to do a gradient over the top of this, but I liked it so much I didn’t want to.

Polishes used:
1. W7 Black / NYC Grand Central Station / Model’s Own Artistix Nail Beads
2. NYC Lexington Yellow / Cheeky XL C / W7 Black / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri
3. MUA Pistachio Ice Cream / Sally Hansen Insta-Dri
